What’s New In Marketing: September Edition

13 Sep 2024

There’s always something new happening in the world of social media, and this month is no different. From Facebook bringing back an old favourite to TikTok fine-tuning its algorithm, there are some big updates you’ll want to know about. So, grab a coffee and let’s get into what’s new in marketing this month so far!

1. Facebook is Bringing Back Pokes

Remember Facebook Pokes? Well, they’re making a comeback! Facebook is bringing back its original feature that was used to grab someone’s attention (in the most subtle way possible). It’s an interesting throwback move—will it catch on in today’s world? We’ll have to wait and see, but it’s a fun bit of nostalgia worth keeping an eye on.

2. TikTok’s New For You Algorithm Controls

TikTok is giving users more control over what they see on their For You page with a new slider tool. This update will let users indicate they want to see more content on certain topics, helping them personalise their feed even further. Whether you’re into cooking tutorials or travel vlogs, you can now fine-tune your feed to see more of what you love—and less of what you don’t.

3. Instagram’s “Pics Please” Sticker is Now “Photo Drop”

Instagram is continuing to test and tweak its features, and the “Pics Please” sticker is getting a fresh rebrand as “Photo Drop.” This tool encourages users to share photos in response to prompts—sort of like BeReal, but in Instagram Stories. It’s still in the works, but it’s one to watch as Instagram continues to evolve its interactive features.

4. Public Comments for Instagram Stories

Instagram Stories just got a whole lot more interactive. Now, users are able to leave public comments on Stories, visible to anyone viewing the Story. It’s a shift from the usual private DMs we’re used to, and it could be a game-changer for engagement. For brands, it’s a great opportunity to boost interaction—just make sure you’re ready to handle those public conversations!

5. LinkedIn and iHeartRadio Team Up for Gen Z Podcast

LinkedIn and iHeartRadio have joined forces to launch “Let’s Talk Offline,” a podcast aimed at Gen Z listeners. This is LinkedIn’s first step into podcasting, and it’s the beginning of a series of collaborations between the two platforms. If your brand is targeting Gen Z, this could be a great space to tap into. Keep an ear out for what comes next!

6. YouTube Shorts Expands Customisation Features

YouTube is giving creators even more tools to customise their Shorts content. You can now edit your Shorts thumbnails after uploading by adding text and filters. This small but mighty update means more control over how your content is presented, which is always a win when trying to attract more views. If you’re creating Shorts, take advantage of these new options to make your videos stand out even more.

That’s it, a roundup of what’s new in marketing this month so far!
